Kie-Kie-Kielo

My ear-worm for this dress has been Phil Collins Sussudio (you're welcome...)
There's a dress that's been on my mind... all the time...
If I just say the word .. "Kie-Kie-Kielo"....
always have a prop.... ;)
Like many others, I was underwhelmed when it was released as part of Named's collection, yet strangely attracted to it. I then wanted it when Sew Independent looked so amazing in hers (blue & red). I stalked Busy Lizzy in Brizzy as she made hers transeasonal for MMMay14 and have since spotted Sew Jean Margaret's, Sara Berkes', Janika's and Annakreeta's.. clearly I couldn't move past without making it!

I nabbed 2m of this gorgeous black flecked brown Gorman wool knit at ClearIT and resisted buying more during the latest social fabric shopping extravaganza. It's a stable 2 way stretch (only crosswise) of about 30%.
The Kielo is designed for wovens, however the three versions I first saw online were made with knits.

I'm a 38 by Named bust sizing, however I chose to make the 42 as I've used my bodice block for the upper bodice and my waist/hip measurements with Named are more like the 42. I could possibly have shortened the bodice by an inch to bring the wrap front a little higher as Named patterns are drafted for 5'8" and I'm 5'6".
I did intend to make the maxi length, however not buying more fabric has made this a midi and I think it will be very versatile for autumn and spring.
I basted all of the seams together and tried it on, before finishing them with a four-thread overlock stitch. I made longer ties than drafted and have had a lovely time wrapping it in different ways.
It's been worn with and without my brown LS merino tops underneath, tights and boots - and even had it's first outing for kindy BookWeek celebrations with faux fur ears & tail as, who else, Schnitzel Von Krumm - of the very low tum...

For those who have missed Maci pics - here he is contemplating the pattern layout

  1. Thanks for the pooch shot at the very end - tres cute! I've seen many knit versions of this dress around and I think they are much nicer than the woven version Named showed us on their website. Yours does look so comfy....

  2. Thanks Mel ;) I've worn it quite a bit, it might be the pure comfort factor of a loose draped front in a stable knit, then combined with the brown - it does go with a lot of my wardrobe ;)

  5. This is such a great dress in such gorgeous fabric! I have a similar Style Arc pattern and am looking forward to making it. Love the knit version, and it's so nice with the teal! Love teal and chocolate....

  7. Oh, wow! I really love a lot of the Named patterns, but this one really didn't resonate with me on the website. But this - of COURSE it's meant to be a knit dress!! SO much better. Do you know, I'm pretty sure I bought that exact same fabric, and I can't wait to get working on it. (Am thinking a batwing top at the moment...)

  11. I really like this pattern, it is so easy to wear. I've made a tunic length with silk cotton, to wear with leggings and wear it all the time. I've definitely gonna be making another, perhaps maxi version for summer.

  13. So glad you decided to make this up, it's perfectly you! Also loving the length, it'll be so much more versatile this way.

  14. Thanks Erin ;) I do agree, it is a very sensible length, I've worn it with flat mary janes, heels & knee high boots, so I'm quite happy with where it's ended up ;)

  15. Thank you Lara. I can't wait to see the StyleArc version - I really must pay their website some more attention - and yes, teal and chocolate are such a lovely pairing ;)

  16. Ohhh, I can't wait to see what you sew from it - it's such a lovely weight, and not too stretchy (i.e.. it played very nicely!). And I am SO influenced by everyone else, I can't visualise them as photographed, but love the versions I see online & IRL ;)

  17. Thanks Kat - I can't wait to see your version made up!

  18. Thanks Anne ;) I have to have Named filtered for me by other bloggers (my lack of vision entirely), there are some gorgeous designs featured, so I'm very grateful that others share their versions!

  19. Considering I adore your version and it was my "I must make this" fixation, please feel free ;)p I can't wait to see it ;)

  20. Thanks Jenny. It is very me, and on very high rotation ... I might need to make a second version so people don't get completely sick of seeing it ;)

  21. Thanks Sandra! I'm not sure if I've spotted yours - I'd love to have a look - and silk cotton sounds perfect - there might just be a version in my summer wardrobe ;)

  22. Although I made in back in May I only just got it to the blog at the end of August ... here http://sewiststitch.blogspot.co.nz/2014/08/silk-kielo-wrap.html It looks quite different from all the others I've seen :-)

  23. Thanks Sandra! I remember yours now - I adore your geometric fabric & it as a tunic - you've inspired me to add another variation to my-to-sew-list! ;)

  25. Thanks Patricia ;) I'm glad it looks ok from the back (as you know, we don't tend to look at ourselves from that angle if it can be avoided ;) ) I really like the silhouette, Named has done nicely ;)

  26. I've been intrigued by this pattern since it came out, but your dress is making me think I really need to buy the pattern and make one! Love this! It would look great with some Alabama stitchin' too :-)

    1. Yes!!! It's a lovely, versatile pattern, I saw one with really wide structural ties last week, so fabulous! I think it would lend itself beautifully to some AC love, and I can't wait to see what you create ;)

    1. I love that sleeves are now an option - inspired by Helen's (and everyone else's!), I'm very tempted to make another 1 or 2 so as well ;)
