Teal waterfall cardigan = Swoon

I do like teal. And when there's just enough left on the bolt of snuggly luscious wool knit at Rathdowne Remnants for a waterfall cardigan, well, how could I not indulge!

The pattern is Swoon's free Scarf Neck Cardigan, which comes in both women's and girls sizing. It's been made up recently (& locally) by MrsNickpea, Lara Thornberry and Sewn By Elizabeth, who was working on one at SewAway.

The pattern has princess seaming and a draped front, no closures, but it wraps neatly across, so I made a matching self-fabric belt for those days when I want a fitted, rather than a waterfall cardigan.

There are instructions for both finishing on the overlocker and for french seaming - and just for a change, I chose the french seaming option - it's lovely! (detail pic is at the end in the June creation image)
The sleeves were a tad difficult to fit in nicely, however I didn't adjust for my forward shoulders (usually 1cm front & back), and they are sewn in the round, rather than flat, so that may have contributed.
I love the length of the sleeves! I didn't shorten them... The sizing was fairly true to size - I made the M and narrowed it 1cm at each side.
yes, it's caught on my skirt - it's a nice length on.
I used most of my 2m of 150cm wide knit, I do have just enough left for a snuggly under layer (or scarf...). I used a 'nap layout' and for the first time, found it more economical to place & cut the pattern pieces on the fabric while folded (or I was simply having a Social Sewing vague moment - Thanks Nicola for coming to my rescue!).
Such a snuggly cardi - perfect for mummy cuddles
In other sewing updates, I've paired it in the pics with my black cord Moss (Grainline) and Alice in Wonderland Espresso leggings (pattern by Sewing Cake, fabric ?Dangerfield from Clear-IT).
Teal Swoon, Cord Moss, Merino Renfrew & 2 Espressos (Alice & Cappuccino)
During Indie Pattern Month June 2014, I also made a pair of cappuccino Espressos in a brown/blue merino knit from Tessuti (seen in my AcCord Moss post) and a brown merino Renfrew (Sewaholic).

  1. Gorgeous! Really gorgeous :) Sublime colour, and it suits you beautifully. I hadn't heard of Swoon patterns before, so thanks! And your mummy cuddle pic made me go hug my kids ;)

  2. I like this very much, the drape neck makes it look so elegant. I would definitely wear one of these! Teal goes with a lot of different colours, I agree. It seems to look nice with black, brown and navy and you can't say that about many colours. I wish I could get hold of some knit like that here, it looks very good quality.

  5. Thanks Philippa - we're rather spoilt for nice fabrics, although it sometimes takes some searching, hence the snaffling when spotted! There are some lovely pink & purples that also mix in well, but I do love the blues ;)

  8. That looks like a lovely cardi - so soft and cosy, and having extra folds of fabric in the front must make it extra snuggly :), I'm a big fan of teal too - goes with so much! In fact I really like your whole outfit - you've got winter layering absolutely sorted (and I love that fabric in your leggings). Are these photos taken in a park? The browns in the background are such a great foil to your teal blue cardi...

  9. Such a wonderful colour on you, Nic! Very flattering style lines, too. I might have to acquire this pattern for my own... it looks so snuggly. Which is exactly the kind of thing you want when looking out the window on the weather we're having now!

  12. I literally just finished blogging my version of this cardigan, and now I want one in blue, too. Teal is kind of a jazzy neutral; it flatters just about everyone and goes with everything.

  13. I really like your waist length version! I think we can safely duplicate each others, you can have a blue one & I'll make a cream 3/4 one for spring ;)

  14. They're so easy to throw on aren't they! I have some dark purple merino that I was trying to decide what to make with & I think another one of these might get lots of wear.

  16. Thanks Gabrielle! This is definitely 'my look', and fun leggings are just so .. fun! The Alannah Hill Clearance had a red & grey colourway in the print as well - I do find myself looking at printed knits & thinking hmmm.. will this work as leggings! ;)
The shots are actually taken next to a carpark behind a shopping strip, one of those little urban spots that have been prettified with seats & artwork. (and there's a cache there too...)

  20. Thanks Amanda! Now what this outfit is really lacking is a cape worthy of meeting your Herbert - I might just have to get cracking on a wind blocker ;)
